GIOVANNI IN VAL DI LAGO LAZIO, ITALY 2022 This project is a renovation of the San Giovanni in Val di Lago church. It locates near Lake Bolsena in the Lazio region of Italy. The octagonal church was built in the mid-16th century on the ruins of a medieval church dedicated to St John the Baptist. It was originally completed with a wooden roof and two smaller buildings on each side of the main church, which were used as a sacristy and hermitage. It was abandoned in the early nineteenth century when the new town of San Lorenzo was built. Graphically, this project consists of some straight walls in the woods. What do some abstract straight lines mean when they are located in nature? Simply, they are human traces. The housing space is underground and the space between the walls above ground is open to any creature in the woods. For those who hike, walk, and fish in the area, these straight walls are a sign of human beings, acting as an anchor of human society and sheltering people during their staying in wild nature. For the other creatures in the woods, they can find their own way of using this man-made space: vines will slowly creep up these walls and animals will come and go between these spaces. This proposal for “Storm House” is based on the cutting-edge technology when the unmanned aerobat is developed into the tree-leaf size and is solar-powered to support itself floating in the air for a long time. The house is made of numerous tree-leaf-sized unmanned aerobates, which are divided into alternately used groups. With digital remote control, these artificial “leaves” form into foliage-like constantly varying three-dimensional matrixes. The lifeguard stand is located independently in the center of the installation. The shape of the proposal is inspired by the theme word “radiance”: physically, the hundreds of wood sticks can be easily considered as the metaphor of light, people who visit the proposal would immediately feel the conceptual “beams” from the theme word “radiance”. More important, the tectonic structure creates hundreds of gaps between the stacked sticks, which filter and soften the sunlight. As a result, the whole installation looks like the origin of “radiance” itself, which is constantly gathering and radiating light on the site. The architecture is supposed to be a natural ventilation system whose doors on the east and west sides open to connect the dining space to the smell and noise at the port, the breeze and sunlight on the island, and the views of the island landscape and the ocean. The three food trucks are hidden behind the envelope of the proposed architecture for resting or preparing during off-duty hours. The proposal does not overly integrate the food trucks into the architecture. Instead, it accommodates and gathers the trucks in a loose manner so that the kitchen and the long table dining space can serve people food with and without the food trucks functioning in the space. The kitchen covers the full range of dishes from all three menus, which emphasize the locally sourced ingredients and products. Each food truck offers a different menu: one serves beverages, another sandwiches and salad, and the third serves boiled food.
